Summer Schools at Zip Theatre for junior and secondary schools

Roy Sowden, DfEE appointed critical friend for Partners for Study Support scheme.
Launched in 2000 as a pilot project for the DFEE and continued successfully since then,
Zip Theatre offers week long summer schools during the school summer holidays
Conceived as an initiative to be run jointly by a partnership between a secondary and feeder junior schools and Zip Theatre the project aims to:
- Improve opportunities to develop skills in the arts
- Increase confidence and social skills
- Develop communication and self expression
- Enable smoother transition from KS2 to KS 3
- Increase potential for SN pupils to integrate to mainstream learning
- Help pupils take a more active part in their own learning
These aims are achieved by:
- Children working with professional artists
- Enabling children to succeed, thereby developing confidence and self esteem
- Working intensely on Drama, Music, Dance, Craft to develop self expression
- Developing Year 7 & 8 students to act as mentors for the new intake
- Increasing communication skills of children with SEN
- Ongoing programme review with children
